You can call him another man

2015-2019

The first outcome of the project was a book, published by by Kaunas Photography Gallery, which was shortlisted for Aperture First Photobook Award.

This work has started with a box of negatives I found at my parents’ house a few years ago. There were about 200 processed and unprocessed films, shot by my father. I excavated their contents, delving deeper into the lost images of my father’s life, to create my own stories by using these photographs he took before his marriage to my mother and my birth. I let myself enter into the world of a young man I never knew, and find connections in what possibly cannot be connected with the help of Italo Calvino’s words from his novel ‘If on a winter’s night a traveller’ (Vintage Books: London, 1998).

To continue a similar approach I used in the book, for the exhibitions I decided to create a new narrative from the images and texts for every new location and an exhibition. The selection of images and texts might be formed based on the curatorial themes or the site specification. Moreover, sometimes I run it as an interactive exhibition by inviting visitors to contribute to it by creating their own collages, displays and layouts from the images and the words I offer.
