Golden Age
2020
Since I turned 40, an age identified as ‘middle one’, I started to notice fewer and fewer women of that age in a public imagery including cinema. Being interested in numbers and statistics, I decided to count and, then, to visualise the time of women being present on a screen in the most successful films in the cinema history. For that, I used a top 10 list of ‘ the highest-grossing films as of 2019 adjusted for inflation’ from Wikipedia to produce 10 woven tapestries, one per movie. I used two colours to identify female characters: pink for the ones under 40, gold – after 40. The length of each tapestry represents the length of the movie in minutes: one cm of the woven textile equals to one minute of the film.
The tapestries were woven by the professionals from Kango Textile.
